Explorers

Explorers is where 14 to 18 year olds take the lead – planning their own adventures, learning life-changing skills, and working together to make a real impact.

What are Explorers?

Explorer Scouts, or Explorers, are young people aged 14 to 18 who are ready for bigger adventures and greater independence. It’s a space to try new things, take on challenges, and shape their own Scouting experience, all with the support of dedicated adult volunteers.

Explorers belong to Units, which often work closely with local Scout Groups and the wider District. The programme is flexible and youth-led, allowing Explorers to follow their interests and take on real responsibility.

What do Explorers do?

Explorers take on exciting opportunities like:

  • Planning and leading expeditions, hikes, and international trips
  • Completing awards like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Young Leaders’ Scheme
  • Developing skills for life – from leadership to practical skills and public speaking
  • Volunteering and making a difference in their communities
  • Taking part in regional and national camps, events, and jamborees
  • Earning top awards like the Chief Scout’s Platinum and Diamond Awards and the King’s Scout Award

Why join Explorers?

Explorers helps young people:

  • Take charge of their own development and decisions
  • Learn how to lead and work as part of a team
  • Prepare for adult life with real-world skills
  • Build confidence, friendships, and life-long memories
  • Stand out in college, university, and job applications

It’s the perfect mix of freedom and support, where young people are encouraged to push themselves and shape their future.

How it works

  • Age group: 14 to 18 years
  • Meetings: Weekly sessions, often with trips, weekends away, and service projects
  • Led by: Explorer Leaders who support and mentor, but let young people lead
  • Uniform: Explorers wear a beige shirt or blouse and a scarf
